Oral Cancer Screenings

Make sure your mouth is healthy

When you visit your dentist’s office, the team should do everything they can to ensure the health and longevity of your smile. One of the ways in which we do this at Estrella Dental is by offering oral cancer screenings for all of our patients. An oral cancer screening is both a visual and physical exam. Completed as a cautionary measure, patients can learn whether there are any apparent problems that would indicate that they may be at risk of any kind of oral cancer. Let’s discuss the different components.

Visual Exam

Your dentist will first complete a visual exam on the face, neck, lips, inside of the nose and inside the oral cavity. While this is occurring, your dentist will be looking for asymmetries, bumps, patches of color, swelling, and any other abnormalities that could indicate you may have an issue.

Physical Exam

Once the visual exam is complete, the physical exam is next. This will simply include the dentist touching your face around the cheeks and jaw, and under the chin for any signs of masses of nodules. The patient will also be asked whether or not any areas of their face are in pain while this contact is being made. This will ensure that nothing is missed in regards to your oral health as a whole.

After Your Exam

To be clear, oral cancer screenings are precautionary and by no means diagnostic. If there is nothing abnormal about the exam, the patient is still likely to need to have more exams in the future. This is especially true if the patient uses tobacco, drinks alcohol or has any other behaviors that could potentially put them at risk for oral cancer.

‘‘The entire team, from the front desk to the assistants and dentist, has been so kind and professional. My fillings were quick and pain-free. I feel very at ease and love that the dentist explains everything to me in detail so I have no surprises. He even took me on a tour of the facility which was refreshing and confirmed how clean and state of the art the facility is.’’
