Would you believe us if we told you that dentists were originally barbers?

While dental hygiene has been mentioned in history since 5000 B.C., it became more institutionalized around 1210 in France.

According to the American Dental Association (ADA) and its timeline of dentistry, a Guild of Barbers formed and was responsible for minor medical procedures.

At the time, barbers were the society members with access to scissors and razors — so, they began using these tools for tooth pulling, bloodletting, and minor surgeries in addition to haircuts.

If the thought of a barber using a scissor to pull your tooth seems deadly, you’re correct. The mortality rate was extremely high, as these barbers lacked proper hygiene and equipment.

The Rise of Modern Dentistry

Before 1846, we agree that a trip to the general dentist would have been agonizing. However, William Morton conducted the first successful treatment using ether anesthesia to sedate the patient.

The use of ether certainly made the dental procedure itself less painful, but patients were still prone to infection and post-surgical pain.

This time period also saw the rise in dental chairs (could you imagine having to stand or lay on an operating table during a cavity filling?), dental assistants, and tube toothpaste.

Dentistry in the 21st Century

As a general dentist office, many of our patients come in with fear. Whether they had a bad experience previously at the dentist, have a sensitive gag reflex, or just don’t like the idea of dental procedures, a dental check-up causes some anxiety.

Luckily, technology has evolved so incredibly in the 21st century that a visit to the dentist’s office is different than it was even a few years ago.

Now, when you schedule a general dentist appointment, you can benefit from:

  • Sedation dentistry techniques
  • Localized anesthesia
  • Digital X-rays
  • Porcelain crowns (as opposed to metal)
  • Many more technologically advanced techniques
